Yes. We know. Barack and Michelle are #relationshipgoals. But there’s something deeper to be considered here.
Countless studies reveal that a many Black millennials do not understand the purpose of marriage. They/we have a hard time understanding why someone would even want to get married, oftentimes due to a lack of example. We are, after all, "the generation raised by single parents." And there’s absolutely no shade in that statement. The result, however, is that many millennials, Black millennials in particular, have never seen marriage "work" in real life. Drake even raps about it in his song “Fireworks.”
How many of our parents’ marriages lasted?
I was only 5, I bet I barely reacted
I want to witness love, I’ve never seen it close
Enter the Obamas. Their love, their affection, their marriage. For a young man to observe Barack's PUBLIC love and adoration for Michelle is a big deal. For a young lady to observe how Michelle is honored and respected by her husband is an even bigger deal. And finally, for Sasha and Malia to see the example that their parents have set is the biggest deal.
The Obamas remind us that healthy, strong marriages do exist. And that even after being with someone for over 25 years, it is possible to get butterflies for your partner still.
What I love about Barack and Michelle is that they also acknowledge that marriage is work. Michelle has acknowledged the highs and the lows, but she also emphasizes the joys that come with being in love with her best friend.
As we prepare for the end of the Obama era, I encourage all of us to sit back and reflect on the greatness that was the Obama marriage in the White House. They gave us #hope. Pun intended.
Thank you, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle, for showing us what a marriage can be. Thank you for honoring and respecting one another. Thank you for holding each other down. Thank you for calling each other “boo.” Thank you for your swag, your grace, your love. We are forever indebted. Thank you for being The Example.
Until next time...
